Verse 10

Surely his salvation is near to them that fear him: that glory may dwell in our land.

Verumtamen prope timentes eum salutare ipsius, ut inhabitet gloria in terra nostra.

On the coming of the Messiah, peace will be preached, but it will be revealed a long time afterwards : salvation, however, the grace of healing and other miracles, will be always at hand and accessible to all those who believe in Him, and to those fearing Him with a reverential and pious fear. From this, great glory will rise up to God, with all those praising and magnifying God who see His wonders, of which thing many testimonies may be read in the Gospels. It is therefore this which the Prophet has in mind (in the words): “Surely his salvation is near to them that fear him,” that is, the salvation of God, or rather of Christ Himself the Saviour, will be at hand for the healing, through His omnipotence, of all those who fear Him, that is to say, all those who worship Him with a holy fear, “that glory may dwell in our land,” that is, these mighty deeds of the Saviour will frequently be done so as to show forth God’s glory, and so that He may dwell in the promised land, to which the Saviour is properly sent. But if bodily health will be near to those who fear the Lord, so that God’s glory rises magnificently therefrom, much more will this be the case for the spiritual health of those who fear Him. “But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God,”[1] from which will be made known His glory, “as it were of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”[2]
