First Lesson – Luke 1: 26-29
Missus est angelus Gábriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaéae, cui nomen Názareth,And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
Ad vírginem desponsátam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David: et nomen virginis María.
To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
Et ingréssus Angelus ad eam dixit: Ave grátia plena: Dóminus tecum: benedícta tu in muliéribus.
And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
V. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Deo grátias.
R.Thanks be to God.

R. The angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, a Virgin espoused to Joseph, to bring unto her the word of the Lord and when the Virgin saw the light she was afraid. Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace from the Lord.
* Ecce concípies et páries, et Fílius Altíssimi vocábuitur.
* Behold, thou shalt conceive and bring forth a son, and He shall be called the Son of the Highest.
V. Dabit ei Dóminus Deus sedem David patris ejus, et regnábit in domo Jacob in ætérnum.
V. The Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David, and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever.
R. Ecce concípies et páries, et Fílius Altíssimi vocábuitur.
R. Behold, thou shalt conceive and bring forth a son, and He shall be called the Son of the Highest.
V. Jube, Domine, benedícere.
V. Pray, Lord, a blessing.

Ipsa Virgo vírginum intercédat pro nobis ad Dóminum.
May the Virgin of virgins herself intercede for us with the Lord.

Second Lesson – Luke 1:29-33
Quæ cum audísset, turbáta est in sermóne ejus, et cogitábat qualis esset ista salutátio.Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
Et ait Angelus ei: Ne tímeas, María: invenísti enim grátiam apud Deum:
And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
Ecce concípies in útero, et páries fílium, et vocábis nomen ejus Jesum.
Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
Hic erit magnus, et Fílius Altíssimi vocábitur, et dabit illi Dóminus Deus sedem David patris ejus: et regnábit in domo Jacob in ætérnum,
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever,
Et regni eius non erit finis.
And of his kingdom there shall be no end
V. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R. Ave María, gratia plena: Dóminus tecum: * Spíritus Sanctus supervéniet in te, et virtus Altíssimi obumbrábit tibi. Ideóque et quod nascétur ex te Sanctum, vocábitur Fílius Dei.
R. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. * The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the Holy Thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
V. Quómodo fiet istud, quóniam virum non cognósco? Et respóndens Angelus dixit ei.
V. How shall this be, seeing I know not men? And the Angel answered and said unto her:
R. Spíritus Sanctus supervéniet in te, et virtus Altíssimi obumbrábit tibi. Ideóque et quod nascétur ex te Sanctum, vocábitur Fílius Dei.
R. The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the Holy One which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
When the Te Deum is said after the Third Lesson, the following is added at the end of this Responsory:
V. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. Spíritus Sanctus supervéniet in te, et virtus Altíssimi obumbrábit tibi. Ideóque et quod nascétur ex te Sanctum, vocábitur Fílius Dei.

Third Lesson – Luke 1: 34-38
Dixit autem María ad Angelum: Quómodo fiet istud, quóniam virum non cognósco?And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?
Et respóndens Angelus dixit ei: Spirítus Sanctus supervéniet in te, et virtus Altíssimi obumbrábit tibi. Ideóque et quod nascétur ex te Sanctum, vocábitur Fílius Dei.
And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Et ecce Elísabeth cognáta tua, et ipsa concépit fílium in senectúte sua: et hic mensis sextus est illi, quae vocátur sterilis:
And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
Quia non erit impossibíle apud Deum omne verbum.
Because no word shall be impossible with God.
Dixit autem María: Ecce ancílla Dómini: fiat mihi secúndum verbum tuum.
And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.
V. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Te Deum is not said in Advent except on the feasts of the Blessed Virgin (see bottom of page).
The following Responsory is said when the Te Deum is omitted.
R. Súscipe verbum, Virgo María, quod tibi a Dómino per Angelum transmissum est: concípies et páries Deum páriter et hóminem: * Ut benedícta dicáris inter omnes mulíeres.
R. Receive, O Virgin Mary, receive the word of the Lord, which is sent thee by His Angel thou shalt conceive, and shalt bring forth God and Man together. * And thou shalt be called blessed among all women.
V. Páries quidem fílium, et virginitátis non patiéris detriméntum: efficiéris grávida, et eris mater semper intácta.
V. Thou shalt bring forth a son, and remain a maiden undefiled thou shalt conceive and be a Mother, still Virgin unspotted.
R. Ut benedicta dicaris inter omnes mulíeres.
R. And thou shalt be called blessed among all women.

We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge
(Kneel) Te ergo quæsumus, tuis fámulis súbveni, * quos pretióso sánguine redemísti.
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.
Ætérna fac cum Sanctis tuis * in glória numerári.
Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, * in glory everlasting.
Salvum fac pópulum tuum, Dómine, * et bénedic hereditáti tuæ.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.

Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Per síngulos dies * benedícimus te.
Day by day * we magnify thee;
Et laudámus nomen tuum in sǽculum, * et in sæculum sæculi.
And we worship thy Name * ever, world without end.
Dignáre, Dómine, die isto * sine peccáto nos custodíre.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us * this day without sin.
Miserére nostri, Dómine, * miserére nostri.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos, * quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
In te, Dómine, sperávi: * non confúndar in ætérnum.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted, * let me never be confounded.
Normally, Lauds follows immediately but in private recitation it is permitted to separate Matins and Lauds. In this case, after the Te Deum or the last response, the following is said:
V. Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam.
V. Lord, hear my prayer.
R. Et clamor meus ad te véniat.
R. And let my cry come unto thee,
Then is said the first prayer of Lauds, according to the season, finishing with:
V. Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam.
V. Lord, hear my prayer.
R. Et clamor meus ad te véniat.
R. And let my cry come unto thee,
V. Benedicámus Dómino.
V. Let us bless the Lord.
R. Deo grátias.
R. Thanks be to God.
V. Fidélium ánimae per misericórdiam Dei requiéscant in pace.
V. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Continue to Lauds
In private recitation, Lauds may be separated from Matins. In this case, after the Te Deum or after the last responsory, the following is said:
