Bellarmine on Psalm LIII: Verse 3

 Verse 3

For strangers have risen up against me; and the mighty have sought after my soul: and they have not set God before their eyes.

Quoniam alieni insurrexerunt adversum me, et fortes quaesierunt animam meam, et non proposuerunt Deum ante conspectum suum.

He explains the dangers from which he desires to be delivered, saying: “For strangers have risen up against me,” that is, the men of Ziph, who seemed to be neighbourly but were in their hearts like strangers to me, they have risen up against me, urging Saul to persecute me; “And the mighty have sought after my soul,” that is, Saul with his armed forces, has sought to take my life : for this was the entire reason for the persecution; because Saul was afraid lest David should at some time come to reign, he wanted to take his life: for although Saul was not unaware that David was innocent, the desire of retaining the kingship in his own family, which they now call reason of state, made what was totally unjust appear to be just. “And they have not set God before their eyes,” that is, neither he (Saul), nor these men (of Ziph), had the fear of the Lord before them: for these men of Ziph preferred the king’s favour to the law of the Lord; and the others, Saul and his satellites, were moved by a desire for kingship, rather than for justice, which God commands to be observed before all else. Indeed, it is true that the beginning of all evils is turning the mind’s eyes away from God and His natural law, known to all.
